On Locker Room Etiquette I

The guys locker room.  What more natural public place in the world to expect to see guys nude and have it be acceptable.  That is, in fact, the whole purpose of the place: to change clothes and you have to be naked to some degree to do that.  Why then all the shame and embarassment for most men in this situation?

My guess is body shame, societalized over-modesty and homophobia.  Who knows for sure, but if you've been to the gym in a while, you know what I'm talking about.  Most guys do almost everything possible to cover their nudity with clothing and towels and not let anyone see them naked, let alone with their pants off.

Guys change under a towel, guys change their shorts from pants keeping the rest of their clothes on, turned to face the wall and do it so quickly that you can't see them.  Why?

Set all that aside for now.  It's ok to be nude or naked in a locker room, so get over it.  Now about looking or being looked at while nude: again, get over it.

There are different ways of looking in a locker room.

• Glancing: Taking a quick peek at another guy and then looking away before he notices.
• Looking: Acting normal and acknowledging that it's ok to look around at your surroundings like a regular person and see the men around you.
• Staring: Giving speculative attention to a single person that goes beyond most peoples comfort level.

Glancing is silly, just look.  Looking is normal, but definitely not the norm in locker rooms as most guys stare straight ahead or look anywhere other than at any one else.  Staring is really inappropriate, it's taking a situation that should be healthy and acceptable and elevating it to an inappropriate level.  Still, sometimes staring is hard to resist, particularly when confronted with a particularly fine specimen of a naked man.

A locker room is a good place to get your feet wet with nudity; a safe environment without danger of any adverse reprecussions where it's perfectly appropriate.  If you're comfortable with your nudity, it's also a great place to enjoy brief moments of it with other men.  On a very very mild level it may also be a place to express your exhibitionism; particularly with the climate of body shame and cover-up most men adhere to.

When I am in the gym locker room, I make no move to 'hide' my nudity when changing clothes or going about my business.  I don't deliberately shove my nakedness into another guys face; but I don't face the wall or any of the other 'hide' tactics many men use.

Usually my nude-defiance kicks in, and I make sure I get fully undressed before starting to get dressed again.  Meaning, I take off all my clothes before putting the new ones on.  A majority of the time, my exhibitionist side likes a little fun as well. 

When going to or from the showers, I walk naked through the locker room, carrying my towel with me and not wrapping it around my waist.  When shaving at the sink, my towel lays on the counter beside me and I stand nude and in full view.  While these things are not particularly exhibitionistic, the environment where hardly any guys walk naked or stand naked while doing things makes it so in a very low-key way.

The steam room is another area where nudity and low-grade exhibitionism get a chance to be enjoyed, and instead of sitting with my towel wrapped around my waist, I either don't take it into the steam room with me at all, or I sit on it, leaving myself nude to enjoy the heat. 

While these things often get stares or seem to make many guys uncomfortable, being nude in a locker room may go against convention, but it can in no way be considered inappropriate.

Unfortunately most gym showers now are private, seperate cubicles with 'privacy' curtains so no one can see you naked while showering.  Some gyms, however, maintain the open-shower areas, where men simply shower together nude the way it should be.

The next time you hit the gym locker room, consider your options.  Be a guy, be proud that you are a guy and not ashamed, look appropriately at the other men who are working on keeping their bodies fit, and share yourself with them in return nude.  There is not, and should not be any shame in yourself or your body.

On Steaming At The Gym Show

At the gym yesterday, the locker room was packed when I entered.  I stripped naked, put all my clothes away then put on a pair of stretchy running pants and went to go work out.  I was checked-out by many of the guys during my period of nudity, some of whom were arriving and some of whom were leaving.

On Male Body Beautiful

It amazes me to think that many people are offended by the naked male body.  It is such a beautiful thing, a masterwork of creation.  Each of us has a naked body, and half the world is male, so what is the big deal, the shame and the disdain about it all?
